How does E. H. Butler Library develop its collection, and what are the guidelines for requesting streaming media?

Answer

E. H. Butler Library develops its collection to support the academic and intellectual needs of Buffalo State. Its efforts focus on three primary areas:

  • Curriculum support: Priority is given to materials that directly support Buffalo State courses, with an emphasis on undergraduate learning.
  • Faculty research: The Library collects materials that support faculty scholarship, while supplementing gaps through interlibrary loan, resource sharing, and consortial agreements.
  • Student enrichment: The collection also includes materials for recreational reading, personal growth, and general intellectual development.

The Library collaborates with academic departments to stay aligned with curricular changes and evolving student needs. While the general collection emphasizes current resources, Special Collections and Archives preserve historical materials related to the campus and broader context.

Collection decisions are guided by professional reviews that evaluate the quality and relevance of materials.

Streaming Media & Licensing Guidelines

  • Streaming films are licensed for one year and must be re-requested annually.
  • Requests should be submitted before the semester begins; processing typically takes 2–4 days.
  • Media licensing is coordinated by the Information Management department and partially funded through the Technology Fee.

Due to budget constraints and high demand:

  • Instructors should limit film requests to those essential for course objectives.
  • Re-use and shared use of streaming media is strongly encouraged.
  • The Library may cap requests at 5 films per section or $750.
  • Departments requesting films for events or non-instructional purposes must cover licensing costs.
  • The Library discourages the use of copyright-infringing or questionable sources.
