Who May Access Library Computers and What Are the Usage Policies?

Who can use computers in E. H. Butler Library? Computers in E. H. Butler Library are available to Buffalo State students, faculty, staff, and emeriti faculty and staff. A valid Buffalo State username and password are required to log in.
Are guest users allowed to access library computers? Yes, guest logins are available for individuals with a temporary educational affiliation with Buffalo State, such as visiting scholars. These accounts are issued by the IT Help Desk in the library and may only be used on-site. Other visitors may bring their own devices and use the library’s guest Wi-Fi.
What is considered acceptable use of library computers? Library computers are intended primarily for academic use. While recreational activities such as gaming are permitted, users may be asked to relinquish a computer if another user needs it for academic purposes.
Can I use computers with specialized software? Yes, but computers equipped with specialized software may be reassigned if they are not actively being used and another patron requires access for academic work.
Are there restrictions on how library computers can be used? Yes. Using New York State resources for personal profit or operating a for-profit business is strictly prohibited.
What are the guidelines regarding inappropriate or explicit content? Displaying, downloading, or printing sexually explicit material may be considered sexual harassment. Any complaints related to such activity will be reported to University Police.
